5Awesome upgrade for 15" or 17" MacBook Pro with ExpressCard34 SlotNov 10, 2010
By Steven W. Graff "foreignthinker"
Amazing! If you want your MacBook Pro 17" performance to scream, get this card and then make it your boot-drive with applications. I have never added an upgrade of any type that changed the performance of one of my computers so dramatically. Start-up to 100% functionality with network access takes 42 seconds, applications like mail, calendar, address book open in a little under 2 seconds, normally sluggish apps like iWork and iTunes take just 3.2 seconds to open, iPhoto with a 6,811 photo library in 8.1 seconds, even Photoshop opens in 9 seconds. My 2009 17" Unibody is now more responsive than a top-of-the-line MacPro desktop with standard HD. I tried the 48 GB version of this card first and was so impressed with the speed gains I returned the 48 GB and went to the larger capacity so I could fit 100% of my applications and have a little left over.

Note: 1) Formatted as a boot disk the capacity was 90.02 GB, not 96 GB. 2) like the 48GB this will make your MacBook a little warmer on the left side, but it will not be hot or hot to the touch like the underside of a most Apple laptops. I have not seen an increase in cooling fan operation.

5Awesome for Macbook Pro 17Nov 26, 2010
By Dennis C. Smith
I agree completely with "foreignthinker's" review. My Macbook Pro 17 is an older 2007 model (identifier 3,1) and following the same format procedure it works as a boot drive just fine. Speed increase (my internal drive is a 5400 rpm model) is just incredible.

5incredible speed increaseDec 17, 2010

I put this in my express slot on a unibody 17" macbook pro and it's like getting a new laptop. It's much faster and I freed up space on my regular drive which I now only use for media files. As SSD drive prices come down I'd consider replacing my main drive with an SSD. And I get it from M-Factor storage again. Their customer service was outstanding. Do I sound happy with my purchase? I am.

5Excelent solution!Mar 06, 2011
By Giovanni Dienstmann "Niraj"
I own a MacBook Pro 2010, 17 inch, and I had read in some foruns that it is possible to boot from a ExpressCard SSD, and that the performance boost is amazing. After searching a bit in the internet I decided to buy this one, both because it was the one with largest capacity avaiable, as well as because I read some reviews of people that have used it in their Macs and it worked fine.
I`m using it for a couple of weeks and can say that I am extremely satisfied with it. I had no problems using it whatsoever. I copied my whole system and applications to it using SuperDuper, and now I`m always booting my Mac thourgh this SSD. All my other files continue in the internal HDD, and their access is seamless. My booting time, considering the time to open the last program that opens at loging (skype connecting) went from 70 seconds to 38! Opening all aplications has become twice as fast as well. An excelent solution for having the benefits of SSD without spending a lot of money in a large SSD for system + user files.
However, I should say that from what I have tried it is not possible to install and boot Windows from an ExpressCard SSD. It seems to be a problem with Windows itself, that can`t boot from an "external" source (though I thought the ExpressCard was considered internal).

4SSD ExpresscardMay 29, 2011
By John Lamoreaux
Seem to be a good product, but even without any activity, the SSD become very hot & bring this heat to the top of the laptop.
Not sure how long it will last.
Recommandation: If used as a backup drive, remove between backups.
