I'm thrilled with my purchase. My computer zings! Even before the new video card and extra RAM, I noticed a big improvement in performance and was able to run streaming video without hesitations and choppiness.

Pentium D stands for Pentium DO!Aug 26, 2011
By johnneTEE If you're looking for an inexpensive way to start building your own computers and don't necessarily need the latest and greatest hardware (say for a childs computer) the Pentium D is the way to go. I got the Pentium D when it first came out and was upgrading from a Dual Pentium 3 1.0 ghz Processor. The jump in speed was amazing but also the stability of the processor amazed me. Even though I loved my PIII Processor as I started to push my computer a bit more with 3D animation and graphics it just couldn't keep up anymore. I had tried P4 Hyper-threaded processors and found those to be laggy and buggy at times. But with the Pentium D I felt like I was truly working with an Upgraded PIII that I loved already. The other great thing about this processor is that it was the first one that was able to work in either a 32-bit or 64-bit OS. When I first got this chip I was on a 32-bit WinXP system. Then, because I wanted to experiment with it, switched over to WinXP64. Without a hiccup the processor kept chugging along and worked even better than it did in the 32 bit OS. I skipped upgrading to Vista but when Win7 came out, I immediately jumped over to the Win764 OS and still no problems. I'm actually still using this chip and board for all my 3D animation and 3D gaming.
As for cons: The board I'm using is an Intel Classics board and the board has a limitation of only 4GB's of RAM as do most boards that support the PD. As an animator, render time is something I have to pay real close attention to and this chip does under perform in that area compared to modern day chips (i3, i5, i7's). But if you're just doing some casual gaming, or just experimenting building your own computer this is a great chip to go with. The hardware it inexpensive now and will let you do just about anything that todays chips let you do.
OLD Tech still runs goodMar 30, 2011
By Ultra Old tech, bought used and runs good.
Only reason ease of use is still not so great is that you have to have aftermarket cooler to really max out this chip. Also, watch out for your mobo's limits as it's possible that your mobo can be a hindrance as well.

Superbly Awesome ProductJun 26, 2009

This CPU I purchased was a great upgrade from my low end Pentium D I had before. My computer is just quick and nimble, it does everything very well I throw at it, from Bluray viewing, word documents, and downloading music, all at the same time! I even play graphic intensive games it does very, very well, of course paid up with a nice video card, such as my Nvidia 8800 GT. Pentium D are the best out there without having to change the motherboard and such just to accommodate those new Core 2 Duo CPUs.
Just make sure you do your research to make sure its compatible with your computer.
