I am in the process of setting up my new to me, HP workstation server which has this processor in one of its two(2) slots. I see these 2.66 Ghz dual cores chips offered on eBay for about a twenty dollar bill; some with and some without shipping.
In reading parts of the HP manual I find, when the workstation has both processors slot filled, they don't need to be or have the same GHz rating, but other sources say they need to be the same. For my needs I would typically not need 4 cores active, but the advantage of having a high end workstation from about 3 years ago, is that it emphasizes expandability for its era, and even now aftermarket cards still accommodate the very many slots. I think I received a score of about 1700 for a single processor and Win7 Prof. in "PowerMarks".
So, even though I own this processor I have little experience with it, so I am soliciting recommendations and contributions from Amazon buyers for the LGA771 platform.
