Description:

Kingston introduces its second generation SSDNow V solid-state drive to help consumers and organizations of all sizes enhance the performance of computers that have a Serial ATA (SATA) interface and thus extend the lifecycle. SSDNow V drives increase performance with impressive input and output operations per second (IOPS). With higher IOPS than a standar mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), SSDNow V allows for faster boot times and faster application loads than HDDs, ultimately making any user more productive. The SSDNow V consumes less power and generates less heat than a traditional HDD, at a fraction of the cost of a new system. With no moving parts, it can handle demanding conditions and this is perfect for road warriors and those who push the limits of their notebooks. Features include uses MLC NAND flash memory, shock resistant, handles S.M.A.R.T functions. Specs include 200MB/sec sequential read throughput, 160MB/sec write throughput, SATA 1.5GB/sec and 3.0 GB/sec interfaces. Comes with desktop bundle which includes system cloning software, mounting brackets, and cables.

Features:

200MB/sec read and 160MB/sec write speeds

SATA 1.5GB/sec and 3.0GB/sec interfaces

Faster boot times and application loads than hard drives

No moving mechanical parts gives it longer life and ability to handle rougher conditions

Backed by Kingstons three year warranty and 24/7 tech support

5smoking fastApr 01, 2010
By J. Goodier
I'm running this in a PC with 8 gig of ram and a 2.66ghz Core 2 Duo. I had been running a 7200rpm spinning disk until it had a bad sector that corrupted my Windows profile and I didn't want to wait for another issue, possible corrupting more.

The performance difference is amazing. This drive has very good specs as of this writing (4/1/2010), but not the best. To that I'd say- there are theoretical differences and practical ones. The difference between 200mb/s and 230 is mb/s is a trivial. Not worth the additional cost for me. I also read a professional review of this essentially saying the same thing.

My boot time went from mid 30s to under 15 (from end of post to opening up internet explorer). Those higher end ($400ish) SSDs might shave another 1 or 2 seconds.

My base windows 7 install used up about 20 gig. I'm installing everything onto this disk and am amazed every time I open an app with no hard disk noise and it is instant.

Don't waste your money on the fastest cpu or the most memory, get an SSD.

6/29/2011 Update: still working great! Moved it to a new PC with a Core i5 and it is still everything I need. There are faster SSDs out there now, but would still look at the "low end" unless you must have a "benchmark computer."

5The Best SSD for Windows XP, Vista and RAID?Mar 22, 2010
By Robert Salita "Software Developer"
Rare that a product has so many winning benefits. My 2008 mid-range notebook is now getting up to 200MBs on sequential reads and 60MBs on sequential writes. That's a jump of 5x in read speed over the original HDD. The write speed is somewhat faster. Notebook now boots 3x faster. No more disk defragging for me, no more disk crashes, runs cooler and quieter. The only downside is living within the limits of this drive's capacity. You can always buy a larger SSD too.

The usual recommendation for an SSD is to buy one which supports the TRIM feature and use it with Windows 7. TRIM keeps a drive running at optimum speed. Yes, this drive supports TRIM. Very good. However, PCPerspective published an authoritative review on this drive questioning the commonly held notion that TRIM is a sine qua non feature when buying SSDs. Apparently, the drive's controller, a JMicron JMF618, has the smarts to keep the drive running at optimum speed without TRIM. If this is correct, it means that this drive can be coupled with non-TRIM operating systems such as Windows XP, Vista and RAID systems. A very radical claim indeed.

I strongly feel that SSDs are so fast and so much more reliable than a notebook's HDD that you really must buy one ASAP. You won't be disappointed. This is a very compelling SSD to buy because it has both TRIM and a superior drive controller. You can't go wrong.

4Do not defrag an SSD!May 02, 2010
By Frederick Alan Leeson

This SSD is very good value for money. The only drawback with it is that its short burst read/writes are rather slow in comparison to other (more expensive) SSDs. I note that some customers in these threads still after all that has been written on the subject talk about defragging their new SSD. Do NOT defrag an SSD. It is technically impossible, it will do no practical good and can, in the worst case, actually lead to increased wear of your SSD. The analogue with SSDs to defragging a conventional HD is called TRIM. The crucial thing is to make sure that the controller of the SSD you buy is TRIM enabled and that you install Win 7 which compatible with the TRIM function.

5Best buy budget SSDJun 10, 2010
By S. Yutalas "nutech"
This drive will use it full potential when runs with AHCI settings (there are 3 choices in BIOS for SATA HD: AHCI, RAID and IDE). So if you have set it up in IDE mode may want to reconsider. Here is way. Testing done with HD pro 4.50 on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
IDE mode
Read min: 160.5 MB/s
Read max: 198.8 MB/s
Average: 196.9 MB/s
Access time: 0.2 ms
Burst rate: 100.1 MB/s
CPU usage: 5.4%

AHCI mode
Read min: 196.9 MB/
Read max: 223.3 MB/s
Average: 221.6 MB/s
Access time: 0.2ms
Burst rate: 106.2 MB/s
CPU usage: 3.1%

Total gain over 12 % in drive reading speed. But it is more than manufacturer specified 200 MB/s. It looks like a totally best buy for the money.

4Excellent but PriceyApr 06, 2010
By M. Levine
Been using the Kingston SSD 64GB for nearly two months on a Windows 7 x64 Dell Studio XPS 8100 with 8GB Ram. I'm impressed, although to get to "impressed" I had to do some things differently than with larger SATA drives.

For instance, 64 GB for Windows 7 is not very much when you start tacking on applications, fonts, downloads, and more. I had to move everything that "collects" disk space onto a SATA drive. So directories like "Program Files", "TEMP", "APPS", and more, needed to point to another drive so as not to overwhelm the entire purpose for buying this drive, to improve boot time and application execution. The registry had to be changed in many locations to finally acheive this. I recommend patience and research how to do it first. As this review is strictly for the hard drive, detailing how is beyond scope ... so on with the review.

Out of the box it's tiny and buying the upgrade kit version really helped because the tapped holes that are manufactured into the drive do not match the 2.5 or 3.5 in the SATA internal drive housing.

I think the drive is very fast. Windows 7 Professional x64 intalled in record time and, after completing the "off-lining" of the apps directory, temp files, favorites, swap file, etc. to an instenal 1TB SATA drive, my system performance went from a modest 6.3 to an amazing 7.0, just by installing this drive.

Disk fragmentation is minimal. I set it up for a once-a-week defrag schedule and it's never gone above 1%. Of course I'm not writing temp/tmp files or cookies or favorites and apps are stored in the other drive.

To this day, disk consumption has stayed just below 50% and I recommend monitoring it. It's so easy just to allow programs to install onto the c:\ drive ... but most installers give you the option. Find a copy of GHOST and make sure when you image your drive for backup you do the same with the drive your apps are installed in.

The only down-side to this drive was it's price. When the prices get down to 50% of what they are today, I'll invest in a 256GB or larger.
