4Runs great, but odd behavior at firstFeb 23, 2012
By John
This is a review of an Intel X18M 160GB SSD.

I was looking for a deal for a long time on this drive, and finally found it for <$1/GB over on the world's largest auction site. I HAD to have SSD in this laptop after upgrading my other, older laptop to an OCZ OCZ Technology 240 GB Agility 3 SSD- 3G SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive AGT3-25SAT3-240G. The OCZ acted exactly like a bare hard drive, and after a flawless upgrade in the older laptop, I expected this one to be the same, but NO! This drive didn't show up when plugged into a SATA dock, which had me worried. Then I also had a hard time installing windoze on it, but I'm not sure if that was directly related to the drive. Nonetheless, after a few false starts, I installed Win7 from scratch and it runs fine, rejuvinating my 2 year old laptop. It was NOT a flawless and simple upgrade, so it's not for a novice, but I may have been unlucky, and your experience might be better. It is a HUGE boost in performance over the Toshiba 5400 RPM 160GB drive it replaces, so the frustration was worth it.

Pros:
+ Runs great
+ Doubles speed of laptop

Cons:
- Pricey
- Odd behavior as bare drive

Upgrade to SSD. You won't believe the difference it makes in a laptop.

If I could definitively place blame for the odd behavior on the Intel product, I'd give it 2 or 3 stars, but the installation issues may have been related to something else, so I'll only take off one star for the high price and odd behavior in the SATA dock.

5fast little SSDJun 22, 2011
By 1.8 inch guy with a 2.5 inch mind
1.8 inch SSD drive replaced traditional drive. booted up fine, runs like a charm, my battery time climbed from 5 hr to over 8 (and that is conservative). Pretty fast, boots and shuts down very quickly. have run it through most of its paces, would buy it again.

JUST BE SURE YOU KNOW IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A 1.8 OR A 2.5 INCH DRIVE. I NOW ALSO OWN A 2.5 INCH DRIVE BY INTEL BECAUSE I DID NOT CHECK FOR SURE, AND TRANSFERRED BY CLONE TO THE NEW DRIVE BEFORE OPENING THE NOTEBOOK BOX TO INSTALL.
