Works with 9.5mm drives onlyJan 31, 2011
By awer25 As the title says, this enclosure only works with 9.5mm drives, which excludes the new 750GB and 1TB drives which are 12.5mm high.

Works, Looks great, and is future ready!Mar 05, 2011

"When nothing is left in your bag of trix. Silly rabbit!"
I purchased this to utilize a 120Gb laptop drive I replaced with a larger faster one. I am getting 25 MB/s with USB 2.0. I just updated my motherboard with USB 3 and SATA III. I tested with an intel X25-M 80Gb G2 SSD. It read 200Mb/s and 87Mb/s write over the USB 3 connection with this enclosure. For refrence that SSD normally reaches 251Mb/s read and 87Mb/s writes on a sata II connection.
Pros: - Looks Great - Easy to install - Automatically recognized in Windows 7 - USB 3.0 Good to go! - USB 2.0 Backwards compatable - Fits standard 2.5" (9.5mm thick) HDD/SSD well - No ac power supply nessary, draws power from 1 up to 2 USB ports
Cons: - Easier to close than to open up again, plastic can separate from glue. - Glossy black finish on the bottom will scratch up easily - Will not accept the larger 12.5mm drive, could have been solved by making it a little thicker and providing a removable spacer for the 9.5mm drives.
- When inserting or removing the drive, lining up the sata connection requires you to bend the PCB slightly. I'm not worried about any breakages but you mignt.
- The drive will sometimes try to power up, fail, and give you a beep. This will continue endlessly untill you unplug the drive and then plug it back in. It will happen when there is insufient power, requiring the extra USB 2.0 male to be pluged in or when the drive used needs more power than it is supplied.
- I have noticed a drop in connection to the computer in the middle of large transfers(Longer than 20 min). The computer will go through the autoplay procedure again, as if you had just plugged it in. The transfer/copy window gives an error message then asks you to either try again or cancel. Just before writing this edit I transfered 90GB of files, which took 1 hour to complete, and this occured twice. If you are right there when it happens then it will restart where it left off, but you have to babysit it. This is ANNOYING! I suspect it is related to drivers/firmware on the unit itself, in windows, or my motherbord. I reccomend that you limit file sizes such that the transfer times are 10 minuets or less. The best solution would be to pair this with a SSD. Then the transfer speeds would be fast enough to handle larger transfers in less time, plus they ues far less power. However, you're limited to the size you can afford since SSD's are still expensive. I have tested with a SSD but can't comment on this issue as it did not appear when I tested. I did not expect this to happen and am frustrated with it. We need standards across the board that prevent problems like this from happening to end users. It should have been worked out in the beta testing stage long ago. It may not be related to the enclosure itself but even so I barely use it. Because of this I have reduced my rating from 5 to 3 stars. Now it's just ok.
Other:
- Solid State Disks or Low power laptop drives may be better for this unit since there is no power supply. A higher power drive may need more than can be drawn from 2 USB ports. Especially if the ports are on a front pannel sharing power from 1 source with other USB Ports, headphone/ microphone jacks, firewire, etc. For reference I'm using a 5400 rpm Seagate Momentus and have to use both Ports on the front pannel to draw enough power. Where as on the back pannel directly connected to the motherboard I only need 1. I woulden't use a WD Velociraptor and expect it work on every computer, even with both Plugged in. Use your judgment here.

USB 3Mar 20, 2011
By Flaco I'm loving this in combination with a 40 GB SSD I decided to upgrade on my HTPC. Wondering how to best make use out of the SSD and then I got this as a freebie from Amazon for buying a keyboard. It's a great external for smaller batches of files. Plus, 40 gigs is still quiet a bit of data and to see it copying to the destination folder at 150MB/s is nice!
Seems like it would be handy for anyone with a spare 2.5" for a nice external drive. Obviously better for low power or solid state drives.
Easy to UseMay 18, 2012
By Hover I immediately upgraded my new laptop to an SSD, so I bought this enclosure to convert the original 500 GB laptop HDD to external storage. Installation was unexpectedly easy and the enclosure is not unnecessarily bulky. The use of two USB connectors is a great idea for high-power drives, though I found that only one of them was needed in my case. It's a good lowish-cost / high-speed enclosure that hasn't let me down yet.
