Great laptop purchased from Amazon LLCOct 15, 2010
By Rivadeneira Luis
"Luis Rivadeneira"
The description provided by Amazon is very scant, however the manufacturer model number (2516AEU) can be browsed in Lenovo webpage for a full description. Please note that the installed RAM is 1 x 2 GB instead of the 3 GB originally indicated in the Amazon description (now corrected), however, Lenovo webpage provides the right specifications. This particular model has everything I was looking for, except the fingerprint reader. Other than that this is a great laptop and its construction quality cannot be disputed. The laptop is not light, specially with the 9 cell battery it comes with, but feels very solid and ready to work anywhere. If you are a Lenovo or Thinkpad former user (as I am) you will NOT be dissapointed, this is a great laptop at a fantastic price.
UPDATE (October 17th) Over the weekend I discovered that the bluetooth module is not working. I already tried to uninstall it and install it again, also reloaded the driver but no success. I still have to chat with Lenovo technicians on Monday to solve the problem (no way!!! worst customer service).
UPDATE (October 22nd) This laptop has a physical switch to turn on/off the wireless radios, but it also has a utility to allow user to switch on/off bluetooth and wireless network radios independently. My bluetooth radio was simply turned off, easily solved but took me several days to discover. Now, the Power Management can be annoying since it can turn off several devices, but it is a configuration issue. Very happy with this machine.
WARNING (November 8th) I purchase this laptop directly from Amazon LLC and got a great product. For a reason I don't understand the picture was changed for the picture of a different laptop (a Thinkpad Edge instead of a T410), so be careful if you order it because NOW there is a conflict between the description/specs and the picture. Also the seller is not Amazon LLC anymore but a different vendor.

Best notebook for work when you need power and portabilityNov 21, 2010
By rajeev I've been using Lenovo T410 for last 2 weeks and I'm pretty pleased with overall machine.
Config: - Lenovo T410 - Core i7 Processor - 8GB Ram from amazon Corsair CM3X8GSDKIT1066 XMS3 8 GB PC3-8500 1066Mhz 204-pin SODIMM Laptop Memory - Intel 2.5-Inch 160 GB X25-M Mainstream SATA II MLC Solid-State Drive Intel 2.5-Inch 160 GB X25-M Mainstream SATA II MLC Solid-State Drive - Retail Package SSDSA2MH160G2R5 - Intel 3x3 wireless N - WXGA+ LED backlit (1400 x 900) - Windows 7 pro x64 - Fingerprint reader - 9 Cell battery
What's good: - Perfect size for someone looking for a portable powerhouse. (Coming from 8 lb Dell latitude D530 with dual batteries) - The speed. Core i7 is mighty fast. - No shortage of memory. I run winxp mode VM for work and use close to 6GB of RAM. It still remains responsive - Beautiful sharp Screen with good resolution - Full sized keyboard - 5+ hour battery life (This was a surprise) - Has a Win key (I know old Lenovo's didn't really have these) - One port for headphone and Mic. Works with iPhone headphones. - Very port-full *4 USB ports *standard VGA port *eSATA port (if you can use it) *LAN *Modem - Fairly lightweight for it's might - Feels really solid. The screen feels really tight with no play. - Large Multi-touch touchpad, Two finger scroll etc. - Integrated webcam
What's bad: - Fn and Ctrl key. Annoying but fixable through bios. I actually tried physically swapping the keys too but they're not the same size - Keys have high action and sometimes I miss the key press. Maybe it's just me. - Display port instead of an HDMI - Comes with boatload of Lenovo software. In someways enhances Win7 but in someways it cripples it. Idle memory usage right after starting first few times was around 2GB - The camera is very narrow view. - Is still ugly - Multi-touch touchpad is tricky and not responsive at times. Needs better drivers. - Dynamic contrast control has some bug. On battery - the screen would sometimes dim for few seconds. Fixed it by running all power options in full performance mode.
Overall impression: - Happy so far with the performance and value. Highly recommended for someone looking for best of size and power. There is some getting used to the keyboard though.

Overpriced, inferior quality, ATROCIOUS screenMar 16, 2011
By BikeRacer Note: this review is for the model with i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, WXGA+ (1440x900) screen, Intel HD and NVIDIA graphics, and 500GB HD - purchased from Lenovo directly.
This notebook would really deserve 3 stars... except for one thing: the screen. So let's start from there.
Simply stated, the LCD panel is garbage. It has no contrast at all and color reproduction is horrendous. And when I mean horrendous, I mean that most $300 netbooks have a much better screen. Black does not look black on this screen, grays are displayed as shades of purple, all colors are off. How bad is it? Well, simply put it next to another monitor and compare - because you really have to see this LCD to believe how bad it is. The image on my external monitor does not look anything like the image in the T410. Now, if you never use anything else but your laptop, maybe you could get used to it. Otherwise, you'll find it insufferable because the transition from a normal LCD screen to the T410 is so drastic. Also, if you require a modicum (and I really mean just a modicum) of accurate color reproduction, then this thing is simply useless. You can use it for Microsoft Office work, but if you try to view pictures or a movie, the shortcomings of the screen render the experience unsatisfactory. Any Photoshop or web design work is absolutely out of question.
There is one thing you can do and that is buy a color calibration spider (at around $100) and calibrate the screen. You will get much better color reproduction (why Lenovo does not calibrate the display is totally beyond comprehension), but the contrast issue still remains. No calibration can correct the fact that the screen had no contrast.
A screen like that would be a disgrace in a $500 laptop. In a $1000+ laptop, it is a scam. So on that count alone I'm awarding this laptop 1 star only. (I should point out that my screen is WXGA+, the lower resolution WXGA screen may or may not be better, I don't know).
On to the keyboard. Initially I was kind of disappointed because it just did not feel quite like the keyboards on my old Thinkpads. But I got used to it soon enough, it is a very good keyboard (albeit a little noisy!) and the pointing stick is as it always was. One minor annoyance often mentioned in reviews is the position of the FN key at the left edge (per Thinkpad tradition - it's always been like that) where usually you would expect the CTRL key on a normal keyboard. It can be fixed in the BIOS - you can switch the positions of the FN and CTRL keys... but you can't move around the keycaps. Well, you could stick a label on them, I guess, but that would look ugly. Not that it would matter much because the entire laptop is not exactly a work of art.
Which brings us to the design. Thinkpads were never beauty contest winners, but old ones kind of looked good to me. This one takes bland esthetics to a whole new level I've never thought possible. Set it next to a rock and people will find the rock more interesting to look at - it's simply that unappealing to the eye. And don't trust promotional pictures (they sharpen them and enhance contrast) - you really have to see this thing for yourself.
Build quality is also shabby, in my opinion. I've read reviews were the screen was lambasted (and justly so - it is garbage after all), and the design criticized and this and that... but pretty much everybody seems to think that the T410 is well put together. I don't, and I base my judgment on having taken apart quite a number of laptops over the years (including partially the T410 - you have to remove the keyboard to get to the second memory slot, which incidentally is a bad design). Old Thinkpads were rock solid, the T410 is not, I've seen cheap netbooks that looked more solid and were better built. Don't get me wrong, the T410 is not badly built, but it simply is not at a level I would expect in a premium laptop. Among my gripes are the screen that flexes quite a bit and the bottom memory door that is pure cheap plastic garbage. Sure, the bottom memory door contributes nothing to the laptop and can be excused for being cheap flexing plastic, but it does make me wonder what else inside is low rent? Simply stated, I don't have much confidence that the T410 will last a long time (I really hope I'm wrong). Consequently, I would never dare put the T410 through the kind of "abuse" my trusted old Thinkpads have endured without a hitch. I like computers that I can casually throw in a backpack and take whenever I go day in and day out (often on my bike). The T410 is not such a laptop, it's just far too delicate.
Battery is either the 6-cell or the 9-cell that sticks out the back - as always. The T410 is already a big notebook if portability is important to you, that battery that sticks out the back makes it even bulkier. Battery life with the 6-cell battery is OK I guess for a performance laptop. But it is not anything Lenovo claims. You'd be lucky if you can watch an entire movie (with brightness turned down) and that's it. If you need more battery life, go for the 9-cell battery. Also, there is an extra battery that you can get that attaches under the notebook. But one thing you cannot do anymore is swap the CD drive for a battery. Yes, you could always do that with the T-series and you can still do it with the T410S, but the T410 will not allow you to insert a battery in the Ultrabay. Why not? I don't know, ask Lenovo. It really is stupid. I for one would rather have a battery in my Ultrabay than a CD drive. But no, you can't do that with the T410.
My final gripe is the video performance. You can get your T410 with integrated Intel HD graphics. Or you can go for the model with integrated graphics plus the discrete NVIDIA NVS 3100M. The T410 uses some kind of technology (called Optimus) where the integrated graphics are used for normal operation, but when needed the more powerful (and power hungry) NVIDIA card automatically and seamlessly kicks in. Or so they claim. How does it work in real life? Not well, I could not watch a 1080p movie either on the internal LCD screen or on an external monitor. I mean, I can watch the movie, but fast-paced scenes do not render well at all (hiccups, jumpiness). Also, if you connect an external monitor to the T410, all graphic acceleration is switched off on the T410 screen. So after a while I've conclude that Optimus is not working as promised. I've switched Optimus off, switched the Intel HD off (you need to that in the BIOS), and use just the NVIDIA card. That actually works quite well, albeit with a battery life penalty. However, don't expect to play serious games on the NVS 3100M. Speakers are standard laptop fare - i.e. not very good.
The other aspects of this laptop are what you would expect. Performance is also what you would expect. The i5 and i7 processors are good, you can load the thing with 8 GB of memory which makes a difference, the 500GB drive is spacious and rotates at 7200 RPM, and you can even get a solid state drive if you like. (However you cannot have two drives in RAID0 or RAID1 like on some Sony Z models.)
So overall, this laptop would get a 6 out of 10 rating from me... except as mentioned for the screen. **IF** you can get over the screen (and I can't), it's a good laptop. But it's not a great laptop. It's average, no more, no less. For what it is, the T410 is overpriced.
I've had various Thinkpads since the mid 90s and I've always liked the quality construction and especially the keyboard and the pointing stick - things I was always willing to pay extra for because they make the difference between an unusable laptop and a truly usable one for work. With the T410, the keyboard and the pointing stick are still three, but everything else is average and the screen is plain garbage. I'm sorry to say, the T410 will be my last Thinkpad, I will not pay Lenovo again top dollars for an average product.
In short: As is, this laptop gets 1/10. With a better screen it would get 6/10. At a lower price it would get 8/10.
What would make it perfect? A good screen, slightly better build quality, a 9-cell battery that does not stick out, and an extra battery in the Ultrabay. Like that, it would come awfully close to 10/10. But that's an idle fantasy. Reality is what it is, and this thing gets 1/10.

This laptop is powerful and fast. It gets a 5.0 Rating in Windows 7 - the graphics being the limiting factor. It has the 9 cell battery, and the mouse nub. The only downside is that Amazon's description does not do it justice.

Perfect Laptop for meJan 08, 2011

I bought a Dell E3400 and found the fan noise was too loud and didn't like the 16:9 screen, I returned it and got a Fijitsu 12.1 tablet instead and found the screen is too small for me and then I returned it. At last, found a good deal of T410 and bought one. Can't be happier. The build quality is good and much much better than E3400, a perfect all purpose laptop. I ordered 1280x800 rather than 1440x900, I think I made the right choice, 1440x900 on a 14" screen will make things too small to view. The fan noise is good, it's not completely quite but you can bearly hear anything especially when it's running on baterry. The littel LED lamp beside the camera makes the thing even better. The DVD drive vibrates a lot when running high speed, I dont' use DVD very often so don't mind it, if someone uses DVD a lot, should consider this.
