Doesn't actually fit the Thinkpad W510Dec 10, 2010
By strictlyrude27 Electrically, works fine - SATA plugs right in. Physically, it locks into place - but there's a 3/16" gap between the top of the adapter and the rest of the drive bay! Apparently this fits perfectly for the W500 and other models, but not my W510, even though Lenovo's site lists it as compatible. There are no other options for drive bay adapter, not officially anyway. I expected a lot more out of Lenovo. Other reviews abound the Lenovo forums claim that the drive regularly loses its electrical connection to the computer. I haven't had this happen yet, but I'm sure it's a matter of time.

Not much to say, it came, it worked, I'm not excited in the least...Dec 01, 2010
By SavageMath It came in a box, i took it out, slapped in a drive, shoved it in my T510 and it worked like a charm. There is a small gap between the top of the bay and the adapter, but that is because the T510 has a taller ultra bay, and this part does not actually say it is compatible with the T510 so I can't complain. (I solved the gap problem by adding a small piece of black weather stripping to not allow dust in, and it is not noticeable.) Everything worked like a charm though. My only complaint is the price seems a little much for such a trivial amount of electronics (brand pricing at work).

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BUYDec 18, 2011
By Richard Davis
"Computer & Gadget Geek"
To be sure that I got the right product, I went to the Lenovo web site and got the item number for the Lenovo W510. I then went to Amazon and simply used that item number as my search term. Slam dunk, right? No.
I received the product for Thinkpad Sata HD Bay Adapter 2, which does not fit. It has some extension on the back that prevents insertion. The Thinkpad Sata HD Bay Adapter 3 has two female holes in the back to dock with the computer bay.
So, I had to return my product. The seller (unbelievably) asked me to send them a photo of what I had received. My camera wasn't used recently, and I couldn't find the cord. After 3 weeks, I finally found it, and sent the photo (which showed what I had described to them over the phone). So, eventually I got it returned, and they paid the shipping, since it wasn't my error.
The seller said that it was an aftermarket product, not what I wanted. There seems to be a lot of knockoffs of the real things, and sellers don't know if they're getting the right thing or not, as they aren't that familiar with the product. That was the apparent problem.
If the price is too cheap, be suspicious, as they are probably closeouts. I was careful the second time to only buy Thinkpad Lenovo brand Ultra Bay 3, at Amazon, and got the right thing. Do it right the first time and save yourself some time and hassle. I thought a search by the lenovo item number would prevent such a problem, but sellers will attach search tags that are misleading.

Works as advertised, fits poorlyFeb 15, 2011
By W. Conrad I bought this product to expand my hard drive space in my Lenovo R400 laptop. I had it installed within minutes and up and running shortly thereafter (had to format the hard drive, etc.). I have not had a single incident with the system not recognizing or losing connection with my hard drive since it has been installed.
However, the fit of the external "face" of the adapter is pretty poor in my opinion. You can physically move it up and down about a 1/4" as it has a gap at the top. I've felt it move several times when I picked up my laptop to move it etc. So far no negative affects to the drive or performance, but it is a concern.
Overall, I would recommend the product as it has operated flawlessly.

Super Easy Way to Add a Second Hard Drive to a ThinkPadDec 28, 2010
By D. Choi Since I have two ThinkPads, I don't necessarily take them both on the road. Rather, I donated my aging Dell desktop to charity and use the T500 primarily as a desktop replacement computer. With an external monitor, 8GB of RAM and an SSD for OS and apps, it is lightning quick and capable. Only problem being, I was resorting to using an external hard drive to store files. If I happen to be away from home, there was no way of accessing these files. Since I wasn't really using the DVD drive, this SATA HDD adapter was perfect. As soon as it arrived, I put in a 250GB 7200rpm WD Scorpio Black drive and installed it into the Ultrabay. The computer recognized the drive instantly, did its usual process of adding the driver and I was good to go. I can swap the HDD adapter with the DVD drive any time I want, although I have yet had a reason to do so.
This is a VERY useful product and I'm getting 100% utility out of it. The only other addition to the T500 I am considering is the Ultrabay 3-cell battery, which would help get more uptime out of the T500 (in conjunction with the 9-cell battery I already have). This battery also fits in the Ultrabay slot.
